I tested these myself. They aren't just washers you can buy at the hardware store - they're different - much thinner. and they really do work!!! No bending or distortion, just perfect circles.
I bought the recommended starch from Amazon and used an inexpensive, old paintbrush I found in the cupboard. You can also use a glue stick, Roxanne's Glue Baste It, or Elmer's School Glue.
